At Katavento, we get asked the same question every single day: “I want to learn how to ride, should I start with Kitesurfing or Wingfoiling?”. As an instructor who practices both, I’m always honest with my students: it depends on your background, but there is a technical reality we cannot ignore.
Why Kitesurfing is the best starting point
If you have never practiced board sports, Kitesurfing is undoubtedly the most recommended path.
- A more stable learning curve: Kitesurfing allows for more direct power control through the kite, making the initiation process less frustrating and much safer for those taking their first steps.
- Lower initial physical demand: Wingfoiling requires superior physical condition, much sharper dynamic balance, and constant core work that can be exhausting for those without a sporting base.
- The “art” of Foiling: In Wingfoiling, the biggest challenge isn’t just the wing, it’s the foil. Learning to control the foil takes time and requires a level of dexterity that can make progress very slow for an absolute beginner.
When to choose Wingfoiling?
Wingfoiling is fantastic, but I recommend it primarily for those who are already used to boards or balance sports. It offers an incredible feeling of flight, but it demands more physically and requires a lot of patience until the balance on the mast becomes natural.
My instructor’s advice
Don’t get carried away by trends. If your goal is to learn a new sport, gain confidence at sea, and progress with a consistent learning curve, Kitesurfing is the right bet for starting at Praia da Bela Vista. Wingfoiling can be your next challenge once you’ve mastered the wind and the water.
